Reading a lens name#

Focal length (e.g. 24–70 mm) sets the angle of view; maximum aperture (f/2.8) sets how much light the lens gathers and how shallow depth of field can go. Variable-aperture zooms (f/3.5–5.6) get darker as you zoom in. Letters encode features: IS/VR/OSS/OIS/VC/OS = stabilisation, USM/HSM/SWM/STM/LM = autofocus motor type, EF-S/DX/DC/Di II/DT/XF = designed for APS-C.
