How depth of field works#

Depth of field (DoF) is the range of distances that look acceptably sharp. It grows when you stop down (larger f-number), step back or use a shorter focal length, and shrinks on larger sensors at the same framing. Focusing at the hyperfocal distance makes everything from half that distance to infinity acceptably sharp — the landscape photographer's shortcut.

All tables use the thin-lens formulas with a circle of confusion of 0.030 mm for full frame, scaled by crop factor — the same convention used by lens depth-of-field scales.
